Grants And Fellowships

Are you a medical or research professional?

Find out about our Australia-Israel collaborative medical research grants and fellowships.

Research Grants

(up to $160,000 per annum for up to two years)

Research projects must be a medical research collaboration between researchers in Australia and Israel. These projects can be from any area of medical research. This includes research into medical devices, diagnostics and psychological research – AUSiMED also funds projects
that focus on health promotion and disease prevention.

Clinical and Research Fellowships

AUSiMED ‘s Clinical and Research Fellowships Program provides 12-month clinical or research training opportunities for:

  • Israeli medical practitioners or researchers to train in an aspect of medicine at a leading medical institution in Australia; and
  • Australian medical practitioners or researchers to train in an aspect of medicine at a leading medical institution in Israel.

AUSiMED Fellows are expected to return to their home country after completion of the 12-month fellowship to a guaranteed role, with the capability of entering a more senior role soon after returning.

Expressions of interest for the 2025 Lowy Paediatric Fellowship are now open.

Short Stay Travel Grant to Israel

Senior Australian clinicians and medical researchers are invited to contact AUSiMED about arranging a 3-4 day visit to Israel to meet potential Israeli collaborators. The grant provides reimbursement of up to $3,000 for land costs in Israel. All flights are to be arranged at the Grantee’s cost (if the Grantee was already going to be in Europe, he or she would be able to arrange a side trip to Israel at little additional cost).

Joint PhD and Post-doctoral Scholarships

AUSiMED is currently not taking applications for scholarships.

Joint PhD from two universities. Where a university in Australia has a formal written alliance with a university in Israel, it is possible for both universities to offer a joint PhD. AUSiMED is keen to support this type of PhD.

Post-doctoral Scholarships. Post-doctoral scholarships where research work will be carried out both in Australia and Israel. Therefore, this grant includes travel costs between countries.

Top Up and Catalyst Grants

AUSiMED is currently not taking applications for Top Up and Catalyst Grants

Top Up Grants (up to $50,000). When submitting new grant applications to other funding bodies, AUSiMED could be mentioned as potentially offering additional “top up” funding for offshore work in Israel. Where the “top up” is required for an existing grant.

Catalyst Grant (from $5,000 to $20,000). This funding is to purchase project critical external analytical or other services or expensive reagents required for a project with an Israeli collaborator.

The Selection Process

The AUSiMED Medical Science Review Board (MSRB) is responsible for reviewing and recommending applications. The MSRB consists of clinical, medical, scientific research and commercialisation specialists.

As part of the review process:
• Additional peer review may be requested by the Medical Science Review Board.
• Applicants might be asked to provide additional information in writing, or via teleconference.

Note regarding Conflict of Interest: Any member of the AUSiMED MSRB that has a conflict of interest with a particular application or research team will not be present during discussion of that application and will not participate in decision making regarding that application.

Funding of Approved Projects

AUSiMED funds research projects and fellowships from donations. In addition, we identify opportunities to access funding from State and Federal Governments and Philanthropic Foundations.

Funding for approved projects is subject to the level of interest from the donor community in funding the project.

AUSiMED will do its best to find one or more donors for projects approved by the Medical Science Review Board and will act on behalf of the donors to have oversight of the project.
