Welcome to the Winter 2014 edition of Insight, the AUSiMED eNewsletter. It will keep you up to date on AUSiMED’s research activities, upcoming events and breakthroughs in areas of medical research where both Australia and Israel excel.

In this edition we report on our recent Medical Research Symposium as well as the "Connecting Women" event; we provide a detailed article on "Designer Babies" which expands what was discussed at the event and we provide an update on the latest medical breakthroughs in Skin Cancer treatments in both Australia and Israel.

Inaugural AUSiMED International Medical Research Symposium held in Melbourne - May, 2014

The Symposuim took place at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI). AUSiMED funded seven paediatric medical researchers from Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem to come to Australia to exchange knowledge with their MCRI colleagues in the areas of diagnosing and treating children with genetic diseases and other chronic diseases. The Symposium was hailed as a huge success, and generated a number of collaborations that will be reported on in future Newsletters....

Silviu Itescu Speaks at AUSiMED event

Thanks to the generosity of event sponsor, Investec, AUSiMED ran its first business networking event. Over 60 people met at the Investec Boardroom, to network new relationships from a range of professions, learn about AUSiMED, and listen to Silviu Itescu, CEO of leading biotech company, Mesoblast Ltd, speak about Mesoblast’s progress from commencement as a start-up...

AUSiMED’s first grants have been given to two highly esteemed recipients - Carole Renouf, CEO of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), and Professor Vicki Anderson, Head of Psychology at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and senior researcher at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and Melbourne University...

Lowy Foundation funds Clinical Fellowship

The Lowy Foundation in Sydney, an extremely generous supporter of medical research, has funded a one year Clinical Fellowship in Emergency Paediatric Medicine at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, for a paediatrician from Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. Paediatric Emergency Medicine is an area of high priority for specialist training in Israel...

AUSiMED has chosen to fund research projects in the area of clinical or “translational” research. These are projects that focus on treating or preventing disease rather than looking at the basic science of the human body...

Collaboration in Genetics to Help Sick Children

The Genetics teams at Hadassah Hospital (headed by Prof Orly Elpeleg) and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) have committed to regular on-line meetings to discuss difficult genetic cases, as well as developing a research project for a scientist in Melbourne to test newly discovered genes from Israel to determine their function in contributing to a genetic disease as well as this scientist visiting Israel.
