Professor David A. Cooper AO Professor David Cooper is Australia's leading clinical researcher in the field of HIV and related blood-borne viruses. He is director of The Kirby Institute for infection and immunity in society at UNSW and was inaugural director of the Institute's previous entity, the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research, which was established in 1986.

For nearly three decades David has been involved in HIV research and treatment especially the development and implementation of antiretroviral therapy. A past president of the International AIDS Society, he is a member of many international advisory groups on HIV/AIDS treatment guidelines and is a long term external advisor to WHO/UNAIDS. Professor Cooper and colleagues started HIVNAT, a partnership with the Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre based at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University Hospital campus.
